How to Teach and Tutor Others in a New Language
Learning a second language is a great investment for a career in teaching. People today are more likely to take up language courses full-time or part-time as it helps in personal and professional growth. Moreover, when you learn a second language, you become responsible for encouraging others to indulge in language learning. You should become an inspiration for others so that they can envision the benefits of bilingualism. What better way to do that than by teaching?
In this article, we are going to suggest some ways in which you can teach or tutor others in a new language.
1. Be Confident
The first and foremost requirement to be a good language teacher is to be confident about your knowledge. This confidence will come when you keep practicing the language. After finishing a course or getting a certification, do not stop practicing the language. Keep speaking with native speakers, listening to, or reading content in the target language to become confident.
2. Communication is Key
As teachers, it is very important to be clear so that students can understand what you are saying. In the case of a new language, you need to be not only clear but also mind the level of your vocabulary. Your students might not know the basic words of the new language as they are new to it. So you have to practice speaking and also have to be simple and clear.
3. Engage Students in Interesting Language-Learning Activities
No student is a fan of a teacher who is glued to their lecture notes. Especially in language learning, long lectures are not so beneficial because it is a practical skill. So to make language learning interesting for your students, include activities like watching movies, listening to music and podcasts, reading and writing stories, and initiating small talks in the target language.
4. Make Students Practice Language at Home Too
A good teacher is one whose teachings stay with the students even when they go back home. So to be a good teacher, you must encourage your students to practice the language at home too. In fact, give interesting assignments so that students would love to do them. Ask your students to change the language settings of their devices or label things at home in the target language. This way, language learning will become an interest and not just a course.
5. Clear the Doubts and Questions of Students
Encourage your students to ask questions, express doubts, and converse in the language. Students usually hesitate in asking questions especially when it is related to a new language. In fact, they might ask very simple questions. But as a teacher, it is your responsibility to address simple to tough questions. This will break the hesitation between students and teachers and make them people who exchange knowledge.
We hope these tips will help you in becoming a good language teacher. Step into the teaching world with an aim to educate students and not just to brag about your knowledge and earn paychecks.
