Inside the Cambridge Exam: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Cambridge exams are English proficiency tests that provide global certification of English knowledge. The certification provided by these tests is valid worldwide, making them a valuable asset for academic and professional purposes. The exam involves various levels, and students are supposed to choose the level according to their knowledge.

What to Expect from the Cambridge Exam

The Cambridge test is a suite of many tests at different levels. The most common tests are:

  • KET - elementary level (A2)
  • PET - intermediate level (B1)
  • First Certificate - upper intermediate level (B2)
  • CAE - advanced level (C1)
  • CPE - proficient level (C2)
  • Linguaskill - all levels

Usually, Cambridge tests are conducted by schools or workplaces. However, individuals can appear for the tests at various exam centres in the UK and all over the world. Typically, these tests last between 110 to 236 minutes, depending on the level of the test. Results are declared within 2 to 40 days.

Cambridge Exams, like most other international exams, have four sections: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. Each section has different patterns and types of questions, so students must be familiar with the structures of the exam.

How to Prepare

1. Focus on What You Know

Students often try to learn as much as possible without understanding the practical application of the language. This leads to a clutter of knowledge that doesn't make sense without practical usage. Since language is a practical skill, reading several books won't improve your communication skills. You need to practice.

2. Choose the Right Exam

The most challenging part of Cambridge exams is learning English. However, your efforts can be futile if you don't choose the right test. Some students choose easier tests to score well, while others opt for more challenging ones. The easy test poses no hurdle, but the challenging test can risk your performance. Some students even take two exams to progress from an easier one to a more challenging one.

3. Familiarise Yourself with the Structure of the Test

Another crucial part of preparation for the Cambridge test is to familiarize yourself with the structure of various tests or the tests you plan to appear for. Research the exam patterns, practice test papers, or join websites that provide information regarding the structure of the Cambridge tests.

4. Identify the Right Revision Method

Revision is essential for exam preparation. It helps you test your knowledge and retain important information. However, every student has a different revision strategy. Don't follow the crowd; find out what revision strategy works best for you.

5. Interrogating the Questions

When you sit for the exam, it is crucial to analyze the questions. Read the questions twice or thrice to understand what is being asked. During preparation, practice interrogating various questions asked in previous Cambridge exams. This will help you ease the process during the exam and reduce exam anxiety.

We hope these tips and tricks will help you prepare for the Cambridge test. Remember that every trick or tip will work only if you are dedicated and have a fixed goal. Start by setting a schedule, target, and goals.
